"thought-provoking" – Andrew Solts

(2 females; 1 male. Single set)

CHARACTERS:

FATHER PETER Catholic Priest of the village church. Early 60’s
ESMÉ Battered wife of Peter’s Godson, James. Aged late 20’s
MRS BANKS Church warden, middle aged and prim. Mid-50’s

Summary:

The Mercy of Father Peter is a short play (under 15 minutes), detailing the dilemma faced by a man of the cloth, when it transpires in a short space of time that not only has his Godson beaten his wife repeatedly, but that out of self-defence, she has killed him. This fast-paced drama provokes lively discussion, and poses interesting questions about how possible it really is to forgive in extreme circumstances.

This play forms part of the Religious Convictions festival tryptich.

"a great diversion for anyone studying Romeo & Juliet" – Jane Hannam

“a farce fit for a tea-break” – Glenys Ash

(2 females; 4 males. Single set)

CHARACTERS (in order of appearance):

THE BINGLEBOTTE PLAYERS:
Narrator/Nurse male actor of any age
Pam director, 30s/40s
Juliet Pam’s nubile love interest
Romeo actor, similar age to Juliet
Mercutio camp, catty jobbing actor
Benvolio another jobbing actor

This fast-moving short farce (under 15 minutes), is set during the balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet, as performed by the Binglebotte Theatre Company. When Juliet has a row with the director and storms out in the middle of the performance, the cast are thrown into panic as the show must go on, with or without her. With as much drama going on backstage as there is in front of the audience, this short play allows students another perspective on one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays.
