If you think you know what to expect from an Alan Ayckbourn play, prepare to be surprised. Snake in the Grass is a tense and claustrophobic psychological thriller. Set in the environs of a dilapidated family home, it tells the story of two sisters, their recently deceased father, and the nurse who looked after him in his declining years. As day fades inexorably into night, secrets are revealed and a mysterious presence lurks in the shadows beyond the disused tennis courts...

Two sisters argue with each other and their dead father's former nurse, over a considerable inheritance and accusations of murder. The play spirals into even darker places through betrayal, blackmail and another violent death.

Ayckbourn's excellent female companion piece to Haunting Julia was first produced in 2002 and is a lively, cracking thriller. The Times called it "a surprisingly spooky comedy thriller'', while one BBC reviewer said: "If your garden has a rickety summer house, an old well and a tennis court, then Alan Ayckbourn’s play is definitely not for you... a ghost play which offers laughter and spine-tingling horror as well as a chance to reflect on the darker side of life."
